Frankfurt, 400 years ago.

When wicked Ferdinand informed Leibaleh's parents that their son had died, they
suspected that he was lying ... but there was not much they could do about it. They
had to run away.

Leibaleh, too, succeeded in escaping Ferdinand. He hid first in the forest, then in the home of his uncle, the shoemaker.

The riddle his father left in the cellar gave Leibaleh no peace. Only his Gemara learning lent him some comfort.
